Kaboost - portable chair booster

I am getting ready for a family trip with my husband, 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter to France in September. The biggest challenge so far has been figuring out what we need to bring with us. Things are different in Europe like for instance restaurants often don't have booster seats or high chairs. One of my friends said that often her daughter would sit in her stroller in the restaurants, but that they had to be careful to choose a restaurant with enough space for the stroller. We're travelling with our kids to spend time with them and enjoy their company not because we HAVE to bring them. Having my daughter sit in a stroller so that she's not really part of the dining experience really bothered me. So I started looking around for an alternative and I found...

The Kaboost. It's a portable chair booster that snaps onto the bottom of the chair and boosts the whole chair up. It fold down small enough that we can bring it with us and fits on most chairs. When I saw it I ordered it right away. (Check out the website for a video demo - www.kaboost.com) My 3 year old son tried it and loved it (even though he's tall enough without a booster he had to try it). My daughter is a little younger than the 20 month recommendation but she tried it and now REFUSES to sit in her high chair! This booster has 2 height possibilities and is good to 300lbs so even the elderly or vertically challenged people could use it. Plus it has rubber feet so it doesn't slip around and it makes the chair base wider so the chair is more stable. Whoever invented this thing was a genius in my books! We will use this for years. I'll let you know if it's good on our trip.

I'd really love to hear if anyone else has tried the Kaboost or has any other kid gadgets that would help me out on my trip. I'm still looking for smart kid things to take with us.

We bring our folding toilet seat with us on trips. I would highly recommend this in Europe, not all toilets have seats and you may not want to hold them over the toilet seat. And don't forget the portable dvd player - LOL.

  I forgot to add diapers, If you have room for them. They are so expensive and they are not like here ie cruisers, huggies supreme ect. just the basics. I was glad the my mother in law purchased a stoller for us when we where there. It was so lightweight and narrow and one less thing to pack. We are plannig to visit next summer and I don't know what to do about car seats?

    Catia, if your kids are still in car/booster seats, can you use them on the seats on the plane? Then it wouldn't take up your baggage allowance? I know my BIL and SIL used their son's car seat (he was around 18 months) when they flew out to Nova Scotia last year. Mind you, that was for containment more than anything

    we went to portugal when my daughter was 5 months, we went for a month. And I took diapers, wipes, formula and baby cereal and baby foods. I was crazy! They had huggies and nestle products there. So you don't have to carry all that with you. If portugal has it then france will have it. dont forget this isnt a 3world country, they are more advanced in some things there than we are here. If you are not sure look up some grocery stores online and it will give you an idea of what products they might have there.

If you are going to take a car seat onto the plane consider first how bulky & heavy it can be to cart around (it can be tough just to get your carry on down those skinny little aisles) and if you still want to do that check out this product. Was listed on another blog I read and sounds neat!

Booster/car seats, playpens, strollers are not considered checked baggage and they allow you to bring what you need for the child/children. If you are flying with a child under 2 they are free plus taxes, but you do not have a seat for them, so if the plane is full they sit on your lap and there is not chance to use the carseat. But if there is room they can have a seat. No one want to sit next to a child on a long flight. They did not tell us that at the time. Next year we will be paying for the both of them so that is a great idea. My problem is that my youngest may not be heavy enough for the small booster seat. Once we get there then we may have a 2 hour bus ride.

  This looks like an interesting idea, instead of having to lug a car seat around. Also have you seen the folding carseats? Those might be handy just in case there is no extra seat...

  Booster, carseats, strollers are not considered checked luggage, a playpen is considered checked luggage. The stroller you can take right up to the door of the plane, and then they put it down bellow with the luggage. You need a special tag for it when you check your other luggage. then they put it back at the door of the plane when you leave. I would put your name all over it just in case someone else has one like yours. I took my graco stroller to toronto, europe and dominican republic with no problems, in or out of the plane.

When we flew air canada a month and a half ago the playpen and my lg stroller were considered checked luggage but I was able to bring an umbrella style stroller right to the door of the plane, they then take it and put it in one of their closets and have it ready when you exit the plane. Check the website for the airline you are flying they should list (either under baggage or travelling with children) what your allowable things are and what the charge is if you want to bring extra. Again, I only have flown air canada since I had children but I am sure any airline will list their rules on the website or you can call.

As a sidenote, if anyone is ever travelling to Vancouver or Toronto there is a company that rents out all sorts of equipment for children for a fee, they will even deliver to the airport if you need. We used them during our Toronto trip to rent car seats and the price was more than worth it to save me the hassle of lugging two car seats with me. The car seats we got were very clean and in excellent condition!

I second the idea to check very carefully with the airline that you are flying with when you have baby equipment. When I traveled to BC two years ago on Air Canada and was by myself with my 4 month old daughter, I did not realize that I couldn't take my stroller up to the gate with me (it was just a normal sized one that the car seat snapped into). Not only that, but they wouldn't touch my baggage at all and I had to cart it at least 50 feet away to drop it off. Thankfully my parents had driven me to the airport so they could watch my daughter while I moved my bags, and I had brought a sling to carry my daughter in. Traveling with West Jet, on the other hand, has been awesome (and now we choose our travel times around their schedule At Christmas we were able to take our double stroller right up to the gate, as well as my infant son's car seat (which was snapped in) and his car seat base. Yay West Jet!! I could only imagine what a gong show that would have been if we had tried to get a 6 week old, 21 month old, 2 diaper bags, winter coats, etc. through security and to the gate without the stroller!!!

We are planning on taking an umbrella stroller so I'm hoping that we will be able to take it right to the plane.(have to double check still) We also have an ergo baby carrier which should come in handy for both kids. I'm hoping not to bring the car seats. I'm phoning next week to book my car rentals and I'm hoping that they will have car seats/booster seats for me.

Has anyone used the seats from a rental company before? How are they?

  My friend used a car rental company and got the carseats with the rental, but that was in Florida. With the other posts check with the airlines before going. Things change one time it is checked another time not. With Air Canada 4 years ago we were able to bring the stroller to the gate. The car seat we had to bring it to another location to get checked and picked up (It may or may not come with your luggage). Our nightmare with the car rental was that we needed it only one way. When we got to Rome to pick up our car we found out that our drop off destination did not exist anymore. So we scrambled to find a car and ended up with a van.
  
  I only mentioned the diapers because they were very costly and the packages are small. In the end there will be room for your souvenirs.

We are planning a road trip to calgary and edmonton in september. Any tips? Any money saving tricks you guys use? How can I stretch my dollar farther? What kind of foods have you taken to be saving from restaurants? What good hotels have you stayed at that are good and cheap but not gross and scary? I am taking a plugin kettle and a cooler, maybe a toaster, not sure on the portable bbq yet. most hotels have microwaves, so that should help. Not sure if we will get a room with a fridge yet, depends on the price. Please help, I am excited to go but want to make it totaly affordable too. Any good advice is appreciated. Thanks!

You could purchase an Entertainment book for the areas that you want to visit. I don't know of any hotels in particular but you could always camp as a cheaper alternative or stay in smaller town along the way. A hotel with a breakfast included can be a good deal. Buying groceries to picnic for lunch or dinner make things cheaper too. Decide on a reasonable budget before you go and try to stick to it, but remember to ask yourself "will I be here doing this ever again?" If the answer is no then splurge and do it. A great memory with no regrets is worth it every time!

Wow those are nice though I want my baby to get one of those office chairs look a like chairs for kids. I think it's more comfortable.
