Since there's a lot of you that are new to couponing I figure this is the easiest way to do it. There's a lot of coupon savvy people here so post up any questions you have about coupons, stacking, sales etc. and anyone can answer you!
Don't be shy, no judgement here! ![]()
And if anyone needs help with coupon binders or how to organize their coupons post that up too. I'm a big dork and love to help organize the binders!

Hi I read the basic info, however I am still not clear what are the chain updates that you send out. Another thing, why would I need a coupon binder?
Finally, how can stacking be allowed! It sounds wonderful, but are multiple coupons so hard to find? can people pile up a bunch of coupons and get stuff for free?-
- 2010-12-30 @ 03:46:07
The coupon chains are when we all mail each other spare coupons. You email me to join, I add you to the list for your area and you get an envelope and a list, take the ones you need and add in your extras and mail it to the next one on the list.
A coupon binder is just to organize all your coupons - I have mine seperated for a few sections like snacks, cereal, frozen food, shampoo etc. etc.
Multiple coupons are not that hard to find (depending on products) but the only store that lets you stack them is London Drugs. To stack, you can use multiple coupons on one product, as long as they all have different barcodes, are not expired and do not exceed the value of the product.-

I am getting excited about this coupon thing! I ll be sending you an email to join the chain!
Thanks! -

I started out using a folder then soon learned this was not going to work. I now have my coupons in 2 separate photo albums which has been fine but I am now realizing I am growing out of these as well. =S What kind of plastic pages are best to use in a binder and where can these pages be purchased?

Pick up a good quality binder, a place in the front to transfer the coupons for checkout. I find that's the easiest way to keep organized at the store. The absolute best sport card pages are actually from Dollarama! If you get the more expensive ones, they are thicker and rip when the coupons are too thick. With the cheap ones I've never had a problem. It takes an hour or so to organize a binder (guesstimate) but will save you tons of time at the store from then on.

Thanks, Nadine. I saw a tiny portion of Extreme Couponing last night, and their binders and stockpiles of goods were HUGE. I couldn't believe how many of each type of coupon some people had.
I used to use coupons years ago, and had gotten out of the habit when I lost my coupon file. Since finding your group, I'm excited to try some of these strategies and build my coupon portfolio again. I started out with a small accordion file, but I spend too much time trying to find the coupons when I'm in the store - time to upgrade to a binder system. Thanks so much for educating us. I'll look for the trading card pages next time I'm at Dollarama.-

It's funny, we all seem to start out with either an envelope, then an accordion thing and then the binder! I guess we see how much we save at each step.
Glad to hear you're back to using coupons!

Superstore will let you combine a manufacturer's coupon with their in-store coupon, although I always ask first, some cashiers don't know and say no.
Also on the Superstore/Extra Foods coupon wall, there is usually at least one Manufacturer's coupon on the wall - you can use them at any other store. Just check the back, if it has a mailing address (usually in the maritimes) that the store has to send it to, and if it says Manufacturer's Coupon on the front, you can use it at any other store.
Even if you don't stack at London Drugs, there are tons of grocery coupons you can use anywhere and as Nadine says, use them on the 10% off days or just use them when the item is on sale or on clearance and you can still sometimes get things free or nearly free.-

I didn't know Superstore lets you use a manufacturer's coupon w/in-store coupon! THANKS!

when and where are the best ways to get coupons? I don't buy a newspaper. I have tried to get some on these websites, but it's not as simple as picking them and printing them, it was too complicated, so that time, I gave up.

Save.ca has coupons that you pick and they mail them to you (you must register one time first)
gocoupons.ca also does -
- 2010-12-30 @ 21:28:28
I have the save.ca ones listed on the side. It's worth it at the start to sit down at the computer for a few minutes and order the ones you want - they mail them right to you for free, so not wasting printer ink etc.

I was so overwhelmed with all my coupons at first that I had ordered online from save.ca brandsaver.ca websaver.ca gocoupons.ca and then from various sign ups at huggies, pampers, nestle etc. BUT once I realized that I could get a mega bag of diapers for $4 or less(and easily) I was hooked. I kept it organized (alphabetically in binders with sportcard plastic pages from Zellers) and I kept learning where to find the next set of coupons to stack - we now get the weekend edition only of the newspaper to take advantage of the redplum and brandsaver coupons that come with it and I have neighbours/friends on the lookout for new coupons too! I love seeing my LD bills and showing (anyone really) that I paid x for all of these items and saved y amount using coupons (especially love it when the coupon savings amount is over $100) Yes, my pantry is full, yes it does take time/effort to organize and watch for sales but it is totally worth it. With only having started in Aug I would guess that I've saved over $500 using stacking at LD and coupons while food shopping. Thanks for all your help in getting started Nadine!

Does anyone feel that they are receiving such a big discount because they are buying more expensive items in the first place, but with coupons? Name brand items of course have more coupons out their circulating. Do you actually end up paying what would you be spending if you just bought cheaper brands or no name brands and didn't bother with the coupons? For example I can easily find a coupon for $4 off Pampers, but if I just buy the Presidents Choice diapers and no coupon, it still costs me less than if I bought Pampers with a coupon. So I wouldn't really consider that I "saved" $4 by purchasing the Pampers. The diapers may have been a poor example, seeing as a previous poster can get them for under $5! That is definitely saving in that case!

I'll buy some store brand stuff if it's a lot cheaper - I buy all our toiletries etc. at London Drugs so there's no way any store brand would ever be cheaper, they're usually free or pennies each.
As for food, I get a lot at LD too for free, but at Safeway and Sobey's I buy the brands we like and if we don't have a coupon for that brand I wait for a big sale, like 10% off day etc.

Allison, I am definitely getting higher end products with my coupons, for example the Venus embrace razor which I never used to buy(too expensive) I used to buy cheapy disposable shavers for ?$3 a pak and now pay just taxes to get the Venus razors. I refuse to pay more than I used to just to use coupons up - but I will stockpile our favourites whether its tp, toiletries etc. I love it when I notice that someone in checkout near me has something that I have a coupon for and when I share it the look of disbelief is funny (although one lady didn't thank me one iota and I gave her a $10 coupon!)

My question is about car maintenance - has anyone found a place with decently priced oil changes/tires and other services? Every time it's time for an oil change I find myself cringing at the prices, am I alone?
-
- 2011-01-02 @ 02:13:39
We always go to the Great Canadian oil place, their prices are reasonable, there's a 10$ off and another couple coupons in the entertainment book for them - after the coupon their price can't be beat! For tires we go to Kal Tire, they'll rotate and maintain your tires for a long time (might be life of tire).

- 2011-01-04 @ 03:36:20
Thanks so much for the heads up, it was super reasonable after using the online coupon, plus they have their windshield wipers on for buy one get the second half off, so it worked out great!

I don't know if Fountain Tire sells it year round, or just at Christmas, but for $29.95 you can buy a sheet that has (among other things that I can't remember off the top of my head): Buy one oil change for $16.99, get the next one free (two of those), 2x free tire rotation, free flat repair (that's worth $30 on it's own) and then a few other free things, and some $$ of services coupons. You have one year to use the card, particularly great for a two car family or share with a friend!
