Bedbugs in Winnipeg?

I think I saw that Norwex had a spray that you can use to combat or protect against Bedbugs.

Yup I can confirm one place. I was taken care of and now being monitored. So far BB free. With bedbugs, you need to call a professional as soon as you know. You can not wait. As well, you need to follow the exterminators directions otherwise the can return.

I checked out the registery and I wonder who reports it.My confirmed location is not on it.

It is only up to the landlords or tenants to register. So not all do. Apparently 50% of the city now has them and there is no way of getting rid of them through out the city. Once they are in the apartment building it is impossible to rid of them through out the entire place unless the landlords evacuate the building smothering it in chemicals, paying for their tenants to stay away 24hrs or 72 hrs with children.

It is sad because you could walk pass someone who sat beside someone on a bus and they have now jumped onto you. The only precautions you can take is take your clothes off before you enter your house, change, wash and dry what you wore outside and go inside... But really...
This sucks.. As a single mom I don't think I could afford to take the measures needed... Sometimes I don't have the cash to make change to wash my own dirty laundry never mind the entire household....

Apparently, if you go to stay in a hotel, you can turn off the lights, wait ten minutes and use a flash light to look under the blankets and mattress.... other wise, don't hold your purchased items close to your body when shopping, and chemicalize everything else before you drag it in...
Do you know your neighbors well? Their children could have gone to a friends house brought them home....

UGGHHH... I don't know what I'm doing I think you started me on a rant and now I'm rambling.... Hope the best ladies and gentlemen.... There are tones of things in life that could happen to us... And well bedbugs are just a mere inconvenience....

My mom is buying a new mattress and she asked the sales man what they do to prevent bed bugs. She was told that when they take your old mattress away they wrap it in plastic and unload it to a different warehouse from the new mattresses.

I am a teacher and I worry about bed bugs being shared at school! That is the kind of sharing I can do without!

when buying a new mattress, make sure its in a bag and yes moving trucks are bad, if you are renting one you should have it checked and or sprayed.
my husband works out of town and stays in hotels all the time, so bedbugs are a caution for us every day, we are very coutious of them. he checks hotel beds for blood dots and if is concerned asks for a new room. when he comes upall his clothes go in a bag and thrown in the wash, high heat for 30 mins kills them. suitcase must be outside in the cold for 3 days to kill anything that may be in it.
we do not buy anyhting used like furniture, if we do buy clothing its thrown in a bag until it can go in the wash and hten dryer.
we came from an appartment that had a insident and they sprayed our appartment for them but said ours was fine. we no longer rent.
i was also told by the exterminator that if your neighbour (who has them at home) came over, its not likley they will bring them because they dont live on ppl they live in furniture and come out at night to feed off ppl.
but it is all over. we are very cautious what we buy used.

Bedbugs are RAMPANT in Winnipeg right now. Doesn't matter how much money you make or wher eyou live, you can get them. My ex had them in his building three times. And, to the person who said that htey can jump on you from the person sitting next to you on the bus, that is 100% untrue. Someone with bedbugs in their home could come and visit you and you will not necessarily get them.

It can cost a fortune to get rid of them, because they can hibernate for up to six months and then come back.

I am TERRIFIED of the thought of bedbugs. Where I work, there was an outbreak of norweigen scabies (I didn't get them) and I have dealt with lice on my kids on two seperate occasions (with the boys, I honestly shaved their heads, bald) and that was bad enough. I don't think I could handle bedbugs.
My almost 5 year old and I are traveling to Toronto in a few weeks, and between the airports, the plane and the couple of nights in the hotel, I"m really nervous.

Any tips on what and how to look for signs of them in a hotel? I've also been told to not put luggage on the floor or bed but rather, in the bathtub, or on the counter...........
Are hotels not required to tell you (if you ask) if they've had or have bedbugs?

A friend's daughter had them. He did a lot of research and found out that heat killed them; so they washed and dried everything in the hotest temperatures possible. For furniture,etc you can actually use a steamer as long as it gets hot enough and this kills bedbugs a well as the eggs. Yes,bedbugs are all over.

I saw a clip on CBC a few days ago about the rampant bedbug issues they have in some apartments. They would setup exterminators, but it is up to the tenant to actually let the exterminator in. Technically the tenant can refuse. So if you even have just one of the tenant in the apartment block refuse, then the bedbugs will just come back.

I heard extreme cold will also kill them. With some of the temperatures we've been getting on and off, that might work. It does take a few days, so you would have to sleep elsewhere for a bit.

Washing in super hot is also supposed to work. I'm worried though that if you wash and dried everything in super hot, won't all your clothes shrink? Also, won't it ruin some fabric?

I had heard that cold just causes them to hibernate, and then come back once it is warm again?

they are everywhere! i here that about the libraries and what not too, not sure how they would live tho seeing as they are nocturnal and come out in warm settings, like when you're asleep in your bed.

my old apartment had them and we only found out the day we were moving. long story short we bought them over to our new house. AND let me tell you, i know feel like a bedbug expert. i did a few posts about them, and i for sure know how to get rid of them! one of the biggest things is being consistent. just because you treat for them once doesn't mean that they are gone.

You guys have me so freaked out about bed bugs now..........ewwww..........but I'll make sure I'm armed with all the "tricks" to check out the hotel room when we get there.....

city of winnipeg's website has good info about bedbugs. CBC website has had various stories about them in the city over the past year. There was one day care that had a child with bits, no bugs in the day care (yet) but had asked manitoba child care association for guidance on how to deal with them if/when the time comes.
There is lots of good info about how to check a mattress in a hotel to see if there is evidence of any. Killing them however is even more challenging because they can hide under baseboards, lay eggs there, etc and hard to find and kill them there, which is why most people hire a checmical exterminator.

What frutstrates me most is that it does not have to be pubilicly reported if they're found anywhere because they do not transmit communicable diseases. So like ants, if a hotel had an ant infestation it's not a public health issue either. But because they spread so easily and are so hard to kill and do bite, I think it should be mandatory that it's publicly posted, just like health code violations in restaurants etc. are. And then they would have to document that the bugs were killed at that location. But it would probably put most hotels out of business.

Nope, this is not hype. Bed bugs are a HUGE issue and they are TERRIBLE to get rid of. My husband and I got them when we were in Kitchener about 3 years ago from a couch we bought. It happens like this, You buy a couch from a big store, they bring it to your house and take away your old one (how nice)... Too bad the guy before had bed bugs... Now your brand new couch has them! It was TERRIBLE.

I vacuumed for about 8 hours a day, cleaned for about 8 hours a day (for about 3 weeks, **I didn't even work) and we had our apartment exterminated.

We were lucky and got rid of them on our first go, but for most it takes 3 or 4 rounds.

I have heard of about 4 cases in Winnipeg. All people I know, who are very clean people and have had professionals come in to deal with the bugs. 1 person I know has been battling them for over 8 months and is still no further ahead. They have had the house exterminated 6 times to no avail.

Take this seriously. It is no joke and NOT hype. I hope none of you ever have to deal with it.

mattress is very load full of bed bugs so its very a priority of being interested of where do the mattresses are made,because its very important of not bringing the bed bugs in your house,and you not being aware of it ..such nasty little creatures can create a huge problem..

I've heard much of complains in and around Winnipeg about the bed bugs ..they need to get exterminated as soon as possible to the last,and not let that happen again.Or we can just be exposed to the big itchiness and allergy that cause biggest problems.

I own a duplex that I rent out and had both sides sprayed. It cost $500 and then had to do it again for another $500....
So yeah, $1000 to get rid of the buggers. But I have heard of people doing the steam cleaner thing to get rid of them. I didn't want to take any chances being as it is my property and all.

Bed bugs are pretty resilient so it might be difficult to get rid of them using conventional methods. But you can avoid exposure to them by avoiding lying on your mattress when you are wearing dirty clothes. Also try using box spring covers to prevent the bugs from crawling to the surface of the mattress.

Using citrus sprays also help in somehow scaring them away. Vacuuming the mattress using a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter might also help.

Bed bugs ARE as bad in Winnipeg as everyone says. I had them in my apartment in Wolsely. The landlord only sprayed us and it spread upstairs. We fought them there for 6 months and when we moved we didn't bring them to our house. Only high heat will kill them so the dryer is your best friend. Freezing or cold won't work, these little buggers can lie dormant for up to 18 months with no food. My best sorce of information was bedbugger.com. Best to have a protect a bed mattress cover, if you buy it from Poulins it's cheaper. Also invest in intercepter traps for the feet of your bed, sleep with light colored sheets so you can see the spots. I wouldn't wish bed bugs on my worst enemy. To ALL of you who aren't worried, You should be, they can happen to anyone. It has been 2 years and I still suffer from anxiety from having bed bugs. Fun times. Good luck Winnipeg!

If people would just learn how to apply diatomaceous earth, bedbugs problems would largely be a thing of the past. You cannot ever "rid yourself of them" since you will sooner or later introduce new ones. The only sane solution is to be prepared for new ones to come in and diatomaceous earth addresses that issue. Yes it takes several days for it to work but a little patience goes a long way. And get rid of your carpets. Carpets are just stupid. Filthy, moldy, dusty, ridiculous things. An area rug you can remove and wash or leave out in the hot sun for a few hours makes a lot more sense. For furniture, some people have found wrapping it in plastic and putting it out in strong sun can raise the temperature high enough to kill them (about 120F) but keep in mind they burrow into the material to get away from the heat so it can take several hours for the heat to get to them. They are very resourceful critters! Heat works instantly but is very expensive. Its difficult to seal the room so the temperature gets hot enough. Try putting a thermometer in a room, close the windows, run a big heater and see how hot it can get. You'd be surprised how heat escapes. You have to be very diligent with sealing the room. Then you have to worry about heat damage to your possessions in the room. Diatomaceous Earth has none of these problems.

You are absolutely right! My son lives in an apartment and got bedbugs from the neighbor next to him. The exterminator sprayed and told him to buy mattress covers for his bed and put double sided tape along the adjoining wall in his bedroom and the apartment doorway.He did all of this and there was traps put around his bedroom and they sprayed again as he found new bugs in the traps.My son in Edmonton told us about Diatomaceous Earth and we went online and bought some after using it we have not seen them again it is the best!
