With my daughter's birthday fast approaching and lots of little friends parties coming up too it seems like we have party fever here!! I've been having fun looking at a lot of stuff online and at the store. Here are few fun things I've found out:
For all the basics check out http://www.birthdayexpress.com/ their clearance is 50% off right now - they carry almost everything. I've ordered a few times and no unexpected fees. Some stuff can't be shipped over the border so be careful when ordering. There's 4 sites running out of that site so lots to choose from and it can all go on the same order. They've lowered the shipping costs to Canada too!
For loot bags or little gifts BJ supertoys has some great stuff - found neat things for a few friends parties. Lots of their stuff is 20 cents or 25 cents...a lot cheaper than going to the dollar store. You can get a pack of bouncy balls for 1.25, a pack of 5 pull back race cars for 1.25 and so on...lots of neat possibilities.
Another neat thing I found is Cindy at http://www.dressupandplayparties.com/ My daughter has no idea this will be happening for her birthday! I'll be posting up and letting you guys know how it went! Looks like it should be a lot of fun, can't wait to see the kids reactions!
I also ordered a cake from a local lady - will let you guys know that too, her prices are very reasonable and her portfolio is awesome!
I really, really wanted to get pony rides but with this weather it seemed a bit crazy to book something like that. Might just do that for a fun surprise for all the kids in the summer! I looked at some prices and if you have a bunch of kids it's cheaper to get them to come to your house than at at professional riding place!
I also bought the helium balloon kit at Michaels - yay for the 40% off coupon!
It's fun having so many parties around the same time - can reuse and share a lot of the stuff! Great way to cut costs! I was super lucky to pick up bowling passes for everyone on TeamBuy - 2$ per person is awesome! ![]()
What are your ways to save money with birthday parties? Any good tips? And what are the things you did or ordered that were the biggest crowd pleasers with the kids? The one thing we are stuck on is what to serve for dinner...what are some good suggestions that the kids and parents will all like - that doesn't require too much work since we'd be pretty busy that day.

I'm really luck!! My son's birthday is in June and we have a fully fenced double lot, so we just have the kids over for a play in the backyard, he will be 4 this year. My mom makes wedding cakes etc from a living, so she ALWAYS provides the cake, who can argue when someone else wants to help?!?

I wish she had a summer birthday - I think pony rides and a huge bouncer would be awesome! Winter parties are nowhere near as fun, more to plan out.

Forgot to add - got a cool party game at BJ's - it's a balloon popping game. You have a laser gun and you aim at the rocket ship and it pops the balloon - came with the laser gun, batteries, tons of ballons etc. - Just tried it out, awesome deal for 3$!!

Where is BJ's? I have never heard of it before, but I'm thinking it could be a great place to go shopping for day care.

My granddaughter is just slightly younger than your daughter (she will be 5 on July 26). Last year (and still today) she really liked/likes Jasmine (from Aladdin). Jasmine stuff is not that easy to find. But I found a picture of her on-line, printed it out and took it to Sobeys to have it put on edible paper. I just baked a cake mix cake, frosted it with bought frosting and put the Jasmine on the cake. I bought a tube of pink frosting (her favorite color) and made little flowers all around the cake. Her face was priceless when she saw the cake. {She doesn't care to eat the cake so that didn't matter.} After she blew out candles, we let her cut her cake (with close, careful supervision). I put floor pillows on the floor and decorated around it like a 'pillow' throne. I had balloons and streamers and all kinds of neat things. She wore a crown and her presents surrounded her. She loved it.
This year, while she still loves Jasmine, Strawberry Shortcake has become pretty important - so, we'll see what I do this year. I have three other birthdays to get through first, but I do keep it in mind and try to think of something special to do for her.
[I do like BJ Super Toys....maybe not quite as much as Dollarama, but it comes in a very close second.]

My way to save is baking cups instead of ordering a cake. I had a cars theme for my sons 3rd b.day and made stop lights on the cupcakes using m&m's/ thin edge of icing around and got a bag of little checkered flag tooth picks(party stuff) to put on others.
My cheap and easy pary food seems to be pasta and salad/bread usually have 25-35 people for b.day parties. I normally get a few bags of bow tie pasta/ large jug of pasta sauce/cheese and one of those big silver pans from dollarama. I cook the pasta in the morning/pasta sauce the night before/grate the cheese. An hour before people come I warm the noodles under hot water/ pasta sauce on the stove then throw it all in the big pan and layer cheese in as I go. Bake it in the oven for a few minutes until cheese melts and ta da. Quick/easy little effort. I also make a small one with pasta/Garlic butter(mom's pantry if you have never tried you must) and cheese on top for those who don't like pasta sauce. Always a hit with my family. I always go to BJ's for party bag loot. I often ad things like fruit snacks and juice boxes to the party bags because I know they will for sure get eaten and only cost .20-.25 cents per kid and helps fill the bags up.

I am soon going to be planning a bowling party for my daughter who will be turning 6. We live in south St. Vital. Any thoughts on what bowling alley in this part of town in best?

St. Vital Bowling alley on St. Mary's Road (next to IGA) and Dakota is decent. Also there is one on Alpine next to the Safeway at Fermor and St. Anne's Road. Both of them offer special birthday party plans.
